Bathroom Renovation Guide: Design, Planning & Installation
Expert advice for your bathroom renovation. From layout planning and waterproofing to choosing the right sanitaryware and tiles.
Whether you want a spa-like retreat or a practical family bathroom, renovation requires careful planning. Bathrooms pack complex plumbing and electrical requirements into a small space, meaning every inch counts.
Why Renovate?
- Modernization: Replacing avocado suites and dated tiles.
- Accessibility: Replacing a bath with a walk-in shower.
- Water Damage: Fixing leaks, rot, or mold issues.
- Resale Value: A pristine bathroom is a major buyer incentive.
Phase 1: Planning
- Assess Needs: Bath vs Shower? Twin sinks? Storage needs?
- Soil Pipe: Moving the toilet is the hardest/most expensive part. Try to keep the layout similar if budget is tight.
- Water Pressure: Check if your system can support that rainfall shower or body jets.
Phase 2: Design & Fixtures
- Sanitaryware: Wall-hung toilets and basins create a sense of space and are easier to clean.
- Showers:
- Enclosure: Classic tray and glass door.
- Wet Room: Fully tanked floor, level access.
- Digital Shower: Precise temperature control.
- Baths: Freestanding (statement piece) vs Built-in (practical).
- Taps: Mixer taps look cleaner and regulate temp better than separate pillars.
Phase 3: Materials
- Tiles: Porcelain is harder wearing than ceramic. Large format tiles mean less grout lines to clean.
- Flooring: Non-slip tiles or LVT. Never carpet or solid wood.
- Paint: Must be specialist bathroom/kitchen paint that resists moisture.
Lighting & Ventilation (Critical!)
Ventilation: An extractor fan is mandatory. Relying on a window isn't enough to prevent mold in winter. Get a timer fan that runs after the light goes off.
Lighting: IP (Ingress Protection) ratings matter. Zone 1 (above shower) needs IP65. Zone 2 (near water) needs IP44.
The Process (6 Steps)
- Strip Out: Removing old suite and tiles.
- First Fix: Plumbing pipework adjustments and electrical cabling.
- Preparation: Boarding walls (use moisture-resistant plasterboard or tile backer boards) and tanking (waterproofing) wet areas.
- Tiling: Walls and floors.
- Second Fix: Fitting the toilet, basin, bath, shower, radiators, and lights.
- Sealing: Silicone sealant is the final barrier against leaks.
Budget Breakdown
- Labour (Plumbing/Tiling/Electric): 40%
- Sanitaryware & Brassware: 25%
- Tiles & Materials: 20%
- Lighting & Heating: 10%
- Contingency: 5%
Common Mistakes
- Not Tanking: Skipping waterproofing in shower areas leads to leaks downstairs.
- Bad Spacing: Toilet too close to the wall or door hitting the basin.
- Slippery Tiles: Choosing polished gloss tiles for the floor (safety hazard).
- No Storage: Cluttered surfaces ruin the look. Install a vanity unit.
Conclusion
A great bathroom balances style with technical performance. Waterproofing and correct plumbing are invisible but essential. Trust Smarter Build & Maintenance Ltd to deliver a high-quality finish that stays watertight for years to come.
